Writing new content on a regular basis is an important part of your legal marketing strategy.
A Hubspot study found a positive correlation between blog posts published and the amount of traffic that a company website receives. (It’s reasonable to believe this data could translate into law firm website traffic, as well.)
But writing new content isn’t always easy. It takes time outside of your day-to-day work, fresh ideas, and good editing.
Are you burnt out from blogging? You may wonder how some people can publish blog after blog on a regular basis. They publish several blogs a week without sacrificing their productivity. They’re reaping the results of content marketing. What are these people doing differently?
What the most productive bloggers consider is a content plan. They have a set of habits that prepares them to blog and helps them maximize their blogging. Here are several tips that can help you craft better ideas and write more blogs in less time.
Create a realistic goal for law firm blogging.
Regular law firm website blogging attracts more traffic. To blog often, you need to have a goal. Make sure the goal that you choose is realistic. For example, if your practice is fairly busy, a goal of ten blogs a week may be too ambitious to begin with.
You can always adjust your goal over time as you become more comfortable with blogging. But it’s important to define your goal, first. You can better determine a game plan once your goal is defined. If you aim to write three blogs per week, you can then ask yourself: What will I write about? How much time will I need? What are my deadlines for each piece? How do I hold myself accountable?
When you know your goal and what you’ll expect from yourself, you’ll be able to spend time on the important task of writing because you’re better prepared.
Write down your law firm blog ideas when you have them.
The time you use to write blog posts is valuable. If you spend a lot of that time coming up with ideas, you’ll cut into your productivity. The best thing you can do is to come up with law firm blog post ideas in advance, and write down post ideas as soon as you have them. You may want to dedicate a small notebook or online document for your law firm blog post ideas. When you already have many ideas to choose from, you can pick one and use that time to write a blog — not to scramble for an idea.

Carve out writing time and be strict about deadlines.
Have you ever set a New Year’s resolution to go to the gym three times a week? You’re excited about your goal at first. Maybe you stick to it for the first few weeks. But then, distractions get in the way, and before you know it, you haven’t made the progress you’d like. It’s frustrating.
Blog progress can be similar. It’s one thing to set a goal — it’s another to persevere. Once you know what your goal is, you’ll need to be strict about carving out the time needed to write. Choose times during the day where you have better mental energy. For some attorneys, that may be early in the morning. For other attorneys, midday or evening may be best. You may also want to set specific deadlines for yourself. Change your blog publication date from “sometime,” to “tomorrow by 5 PM.”
“Sometime” is indefinite — it can be pushed back endlessly by other, more urgent tasks or even by procrastination or distraction. Attorneys who hold themselves accountable for completing their posts are much more likely to make progress and reap the benefits of content marketing.
Avoid distractions from publishing law firm blogs.
There are plenty of distractions that can keep you from blogging well. Your smartphone, your email inbox, your coworkers and even your family members can distract you from writing. When you’ve carved out the time to write and you’ve set a deadline, stick to it. Turn off your phone, log out of your email, shut the door to your office and indicate to others that you don’t want to be interrupted.
Minimize any outside distractions so you can focus on your writing. In fact, the fewer distractions you have, the faster you’ll write your blog. You become a better writer when you devote your focus to one task at a time.
